Waterford part ii - A Walk from Dunmore East
Crime journalist and podcaster Nicola Tallant follows a cliff top trail starting out from one of Ireland’s most loved and picturesque seaside villages - Dunmore East.
This 7.5km linear coastal route has everything a coastal walk should have; dramatic headlands and vast ocean views, and plenty of tales of smuggling, shipwrecks and old sea legends. While this route is rugged, it is easy underfoot.
Local restauranter Elaine Power meets Nicola at the head of the trail, for a chat about Dunmore East and the trail ahead and what makes it such a special walk. Out on the cliffs with the coastline spread out before her, Nicola walks with local author Andrew Doherty who shares with her the maritime traditions and old seas legends of this part of Waterford.
This trail is also well known for the three coves which are dotted along the route. The first is Portally Cove, and it is here that she meets a local swimming group who combine walking and swimming and although they try their best to sway her she decides not to join them for their daily dip, this cove is followed not long after by Rathmoylan Cove another well known beach for some of the locals.
As she reaches Ballymacaw Cove, the final stop on her journey, she reflects on how much Waterford has surprised her with all it has to offer the hiker and she promises to return.
